Today's photos require a bit of explanation.
Each year the countries of Europe get together for what's called the Eurovision Song Contest. Each country sends one act to a
joint concert, everyone watches the concert, and then the people get to vote on their favorite. Much like American Idol, only this has
been going on for 50+ years. Notable winners include ABBA in 1974 with "Waterloo" (indeed, it's how ABBA got their start) and
Celine Dion in 1988, competing for Switzerland.
At any rate, the last two months have been focused on narrowing down Sweden's entrant through what's called the Melody Festival
(Melodifestivalen). I was able to go to the dress rehearsal tonight, and, thanks to my trusty telephoto, was able to take some decent
photos despite sitting in the nosebleed section.
So, here's pictures of the 11 finalists. If you click on the picture, it will take you to the video of their song. Unlike American Idol,
voters are given 2 minutes to vote (well, technically you can vote any time during the program, but then they give you two final
minutes), after which there's a 5 minute or so pause while the votes are tallied, and then you get the results. Quick, easy, and
without any commercial breaks!
This means, of course, that immediately following the performance on the 14th, we found out the winner. Curious? Well, this one's
the winner. Laura and I also like this one, this one, this one and this one, although they didn't make it to the finals. Sad.
